Accupril Review Article

HypertensionAccupril (Generic Name: quinapril) belongs in a class of drugs termed angiotensin converting enzyme or ACE inhibitors. Quinapril is used for treating high blood pressure or hypertension and for managing heart failure as an adjunctive therapy. ACE inhibitors are also used as a remedy in case of heart failure or hypertension but may also be used to prevent kidney failure caused by hypertension and diabetes. Side effects of quinapril may include coughing, vomiting, diziness, upset stomach, fatigue and angioedema.

Characteristics of Accupril in hypertensive patients.
Accupril is a brand name for the generic drug Quinapril which is a group of drugs that inhibits angiotensin converting enzyme. It is a commonly used maintenance for hypertension and medication for heart failure or diseases. This drug is taken in orally and will be converted to quinaprilat as an active metabolite once it reaches the liver. ACE is an essential enzyme that allows the conversion of Angiotensin I into Angiotensin II. Continue reading...

By inhibiting this, it also inhibits the vasoconstricting effects of the enzyme which will contribute to high blood pressure. Moreover, this affects the aldosterone levels to decrease which aid by eliminating sodium and therefore, excess water in the bloodstream while keeping electrolyte balance through potassium reabsorption.

The first clinical trial for Accupril was as an evaluation of its effectiveness as well as safety individually or in combination with hydrocholorthiazide for varying degrees of hypertension. Treatment was done for both male and females subjects affected with at least a systole of and 19 to 65 years of age. Each participant took a dosage of 20 mg then increased to 40 mg at the along with 12.5 mg hydrocholothiazide 12th week. After 12 weeks of treatment with these drugs, the researchers compared the baseline to the resulting BP. In addition to this, as a fulfillment on the evaluation of the safety of Accupril, any adverse effects were also documented throughout the course of the treatment. What they found were a decrease in the means of diastolic and systolic BP on the milestone week of 6 and 12 as well as no effects whatsoever that posed as a safety issue. Goal was also reached of decreasing 140/90 mmHg at the end of the week 12 for all patients.

On another clinical trial, Accupril was used on the QUO VADIS (Quinapril on Vascular ACE and Determinants of Ischemia) study which aims to discover its effects of ACE inhibition in a long term towards risk for ischemic attacks on patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafts. The research lasted for a year of continuous treatment but revealed quite dramatic results based on the Accupril group versus placebo group. Only 4% of the patients during the first year after CABG had exhibited any ischemia or ischemia related events while there were around 18% for the placebo group. As these were done on few post CABG patients, the results will be further evaluated on a larger scale of participants and possibly longer trials.
