Aredia Review Article

Text Aredia (Generic Name: Pamidronic Acid) is a bone loss inhibitor which is used to treat bone softening due to certain types of cancer. It is utilized to treat osteoporosis and inhibit bone loss. In Paget‘s disease it is used to make the bones strong. It prevents bone loss through the use of steroids and it gives high propensity to bones in some types of cancer including multiple myeloma wherein the drug is usually given as an intravenous infusion that lasts for about three hours. The therapy is lifetime and the patient should have it every month. Because of the drug’s capability to seize calcium in the bone, it is also utilized to remedy high calcium levels. It is being used experimentally for the treatment of Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a bone disorder which is also known as “brittle bones”. Common side effects of the drug include nausea, bone pain, dizziness, and low calcium levels. Continue reading...

Aredia belongs to the drug group known as biphosphonates which prevent the breaking down of bones in the body. Such drugs are used in the treatment of various bone disorders such as that which occurs as a symptom of some cancers and Paget’s disease.

Bone renewal occur continuously in the body as the osteoclasts (cells responsible for breaking down old bones) remove bone tissues which are replaced by the osteoblasts (cells responsible for building new bone tissue). Aredia like other biophosphonates bind to the surface of the bones to prevent the activity of the osteoclasts thereby preventing loss of bone tissue. The ability to prevent bone loss makes aredia applicable in a variety of treatments such as in Paget’s disease where it prevents the weakening of bone loss and in bone marrow cancer where it prevents excess calcium from broken down bones from getting into the blood causing adverse effects.

How to take

Aredia is given intravenously through a drip. Patients with Paget’s disease taking aredia are advised to also take calcium and vitamin D supplements since the drug causes a decrease in calcium levels in the blood. Prior to commencing treatment some kidney and dehydration assessments will be carried out by your doctor and one treatment commences regular blood tests will be required to monitor concentrations of calcium, phosphate and other electrolytes. Your dental health will also be assessed and where required some preventive measures will be taken to prevent osteonecrosis of the jaw. The risk of this condition occurring while taking Aredia could be decreased or eradicated by maintaining optimum oral hygiene. Caution must be taken when aredia is being used in patients with decreased kidney function, patients already on diuretic medication, patients who have had thyroid gland surgery, patients with heart disease (especially elderly) and patients with severe liver malfunction.

Contraindications

Aredia should not be recommended for: Pregnant or breast feeding mothers, people who are allergic to bisphosphonates and also in children since studies of the effect of the drug on this age group is yet to be carried out.

Possible side effects

Some of the side effects that MAY manifest when taking Aredia include: Fatigue, dizziness, flushing, fever, hypocalcaemia, temporary bone pain, pain in muscles, pain in joints, gut disturbance (such as diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pains, nausea and vomiting), seizures, conjunctivitis, headaches, rash, itching, changes in blood cell count, changes in blood pressure, insomnia, loss of appetite and kidney malfunction.

Drug interactions

Inform medical staff of other drugs you are taking before commencing treatment and also during with aredia. It is recommended not to combine Aredia with any other bisphosphonates. Using Aredia in combination with other drugs which might affect the kidney will increase the tendency of kidney defects.

Pregnant and Nursing Mothers

Aredia is not advised to be taken by pregnant or nursing mother; there are no data to assess the effect of aredia on this group.
