Arimidex Review Article

breast cancerArimidex (Generic Name: Anastrozole) is a medication used for the treatment of breast cancer post-surgery and metastases in women who are post-menopausal. This drug inhibits the enzyme aromatase which works by converting androgens into estrogens in the peripheral tissues. Via competitive inhibition, the drug reversibly binds to aromatase. Through this mechanism, Anastrozole works by interrupting a crucial step in the body’s production of estrogen. Certain breast cancer cells necessitate estrogen to enable them to grow. Thus, the growth of the breast cancer cells is suppressed by eliminating estrogen. The most common side effect associated with Anastrozole is bone weakness. Women who started using it after two years of using Tamoxifen had more frequent incidence of fractures compared to those who continued taking Tamoxifen. This drug may be used with statins which can strengthen the bone to avoid fractures and cardiovascular risks. Continue reading...

ARAMIDEX® / ANASTROZOLE

Aramidex®, also known as Anastrozole is a drug used as a form of hormonal therapy for women with breast cancer. The drug combats cancer by blocking the enzyme responsible for the production of the hormones necessary for the formation of breast tumours. The growth of the breast tumour cells depend on the presence of these hormones hence the growth of breast tumour will either seize or slow down in the absence of the enzyme. Such approach is widely used in the treatment of breast cancer.

About the drug

Breast cancer often occurs in postmenopausal women because of increased levels of estrogens. Estrogens are hormones that are naturally produced in the body and at high levels, they play a role in the growth and development of hormone dependent breast tumour cells. Aramidex/Anastrozole act as an aromatase inhibitor; Aromatase is an enzyme which converts other hormones into estrogens and Aramidex acts as an inhibitor to this enzyme thereby preventing the formation of estrogens.

How to take Aramidex®

Before taking Aramidex in combination with other prescription or non prescription medicines always seek doctor’s advice. Possible side effects are fatigue and drowsiness, should this occur seek medical advice. Always inform medical staff that you are taking Aramidex prior to any treatment or any medical check up. Including when feeling unwell, only stop taking Aramidex on doctor’s order. Take Aramidex as prescribed by your doctor; usual dose for an adult is one daily tablet. In the event of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Do not take more than one tablet a day; should you miss a dose simply resume daily dose. Endeavour to take daily dose at the same time every day.
