Augmentin Review Article

antibioticAugmentin (Generic Name: Amoxicillin) is an oral penicillin which is semi-synthetic. It is an antibiotic that is used for treating middle ear, skin, sinus, urinary tract, and lower respiratory infections that are due to certain types of bacteria. It is also used for the treatment of bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal sepsis, and GUT infection. A chemical enzyme known as beta lactamase is produced by certain bacteria. This enzyme makes certain infections predominantly difficult to cure. For patients suffering from lymphedema, this drug is particularly beneficial and effective for lymphangitis infections and cellulitis. Side effects of taking Amoxicillin may include vomiting, nausea, antibiotic-related colitis, loose bowel movement or diarrhea, candidiasis, insomnia, and rashes. Its contraindications include prior history of Augmentin or penicillin-associated jaundice or hepatic dysfunction.

The active ingredients in Augmentin are amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, collectively called co-amoxiclav; they act by preventing of cell wall build up in bacteria thus making it more difficult for them to survive. It does so by weakening the bonds holding the cell walls of the bacteria together and this result in holes. The holes created allow entry of unwanted substances and exit of vital ones; this kills the bacteria. Overtime some bacteria have developed immunity to penicillin’s by developing means to produce a chemical called beta-lactamases which defends them from the penicillin antibiotics. This chemical interferes with the antibiotics’ structure after which they seize to function. One of Augmentin’s active ingredient Clavulanic acid inhibits the production of beta-lactamases by these types of bacteria hence breaking down their defence mechanism, leaving them susceptible to antibiotic attack. The combination of active ingredients co-amixiclav, makes Augmentin applicable for treating a wide range of bacterial infection.

How to take

Augmentin can be used to treat infections of the skin or other soft tissue, ears, upper and lower airways, urine infections, dental infections, sexually transmitted infection and infections of the blood and internal organs. It can also be given as a post surgery measure to prevent infections. An initial test may be taken by your doctor to ensure that the specific infection can be treated using this drug. This may be a urine, blood or swab test. Augmentin can be taken via intravenous or drip injection in the case of more serious infections and taken orally for less serious ones.

Contraindications

People who have ever had ever developed jaundice as a result of taking Augmentin of Penicillin should not take this drug.

Possible Side effects

The side effects associated with Augmentin includes: Colitis (indicated by diarrhoea), vomiting, nausea, indigestion, jaundice, thrush, skin allergy, hepatitis, dizziness, headache, blood disorders, hyperactivity, convulsion, severe allergic reactions and tooth discoloration. Should you develop any of these or other side effects contact your doctor.

Drug Interactions

Make sure your doctor knows about any other medications you are taking before taking Augmentin as combining with other drugs may increase the chances and severity of side effects. Drugs such as allopurinol and methotrexate could increase the chances of some side effects while Probenecid causes an increase in the concentration of amoxicillin in blood therefore a lower dose of Augmentin may be required for people also taking this drug. Frequent monitoring of blood clotting time may be required for people taking warfarin and other anticoagulants while on Augmentin medication. The effectiveness of oral contraceptives may be decreased by antibiotics therefore an additional method of contraception is advised while taking Augmentin.

Special Warnings about Augmentin

Tablets and suspensions of Augmentin should be taken just before a meal in order to keep side effects at a minimum. When delivered via injections it should be taken with a lot of fluid, this prevents formation of crystals in the urine. A medical review must be carried out before exceeding 14 days of treatment to ensure cholestatic jaundice has not developed. This can be indicated by yellowing of the eyes or skin, should this occur, seek medical attention. Those with liver malfunction require careful monitoring while taking the medicine.
