Avapro Review Article

AvaproAvapro (Generic Name: Irbesartan) is used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It belongs to the new class of drugs termed Angiotensin II receptor antagonists. This drugs mechanism is to inhibit the hormone Angiotensin II which works to narrow the blood vessels and results in high blood pressure. It is also recommended to ward off damage to the kidneys of people suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, usually setting back the need for kidney transplant and dialysis. Avapro may be taken by itself or with other drugs for treating high blood pressure. Side effects may include flushing, dizziness, edema, headache, nausea, abnormal urination, libido changes, tachycardia, and diarrhea while contraindications include hypersensitivity, severe renal impairment, pregnancy, and lactation. Avapro is an angiotensin receptor blocker; another example of such drug is Cozaar and Diovan. Avapro like other angiotensin receptor blockers is used to decrease blood pressure and it does so by preventing the narrowing of the arteries and veins thereby putting less strain on the heart. Avapro got FDA approval in 1998.

About the drug

When angiotensin II is released, it causes the narrowing of the blood vessels. This narrowing leads to an increase in blood pressure and the heart is required to work more in order to pump blood around the body. Avapro helps to decrease high blood pressure by preventing the binding of angiotensin II to the blood vessels.

How to Take

Avapro is usually recommended to be taken orally once daily irrespective of meal times to treat patients with high blood pressure or other heart conditions. It can be taken alone or in combination with other drugs for treatment of cardiovascular conditions. However it should not be taken with potassium supplements or other potassium containing drugs or food as this may result in heightened side effects in the heart or other muscles. There is ongoing clinical study into the possible benefits of this drug in the treatment of congestive heart failure. Avapro seems to be less effective in black patients. It can also be used in the prevention or delay of kidney damage in patients with diabetes. Avapro should be taken under prescription prom a doctor who would then give the recommended daily dose for the individual case. The decline in blood pressure is achieved gradually therefore patient compliance is required over a period of time for optimum effectiveness of the drug.

Possible Side Effect

Common side effects which MAY occur while taking this drug includes: diarrhea, heartburn, pains in the abdomen, dizziness, libido changes, tachycardia, nausea, flushing, headache, edema, vision problem, itching, jaundice, eye infection and abnormal urination. Should you notice any of these or other side effects seek medical attention.

Drug Interactions

Avapro should not be taken with potassium supplements or other potassium containing drugs or food as this may result in heightened side effects in the heart or other muscles. Before taking any other drug while taking Avapro, it is best to consult your doctor.

Pregnant and Nursing Mothers

For pregnant mothers, this drug should not be taken in the second or third trimester as this may lead to serious harm of even death to the unborn child. Studies on rats suggest that Avapro could be released into breast milk with serious risk to the child if consumed therefore this drug should not be taken by breast feeding mothers.
