Casodex, which is the brand name of Bicalutamide, is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen which is used to treat cancer of the prostate gland. Nonsteroidal antiandrogens are known to block the effect of the male hormone testosterone in the body and if given along with another treatment that reduces the amount of testosterone production provide another way of treating this type of cancer.

Nonsteroidal antiandrogens, and other treatments for prostate cancer are known to cause low sperm counts or otherwise lessens a man's ability to father a child. In certain cases, these effects may be permanent.

Before starting on nonsteroidal antiandrogen, it’s better to inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines to avoid any adverse interaction. Anticoagulants such as warfarin (e.g., Coumadin)—Bicalutamide, nilutamide or flutamide, may increase the effects of the anticoagulant.

The doctor should be informed about allergies or reactions you ever had to any nonsteroidal antiandrogens before he puts you on Casodex. Any allergy to substances like foods, preservatives or dyes should also be informed.

Cough or hoarseness; runny nose; fever; sneezing; tightness in chest sore throat; or wheezing are some of the common side effects of Casodex medication. Whereas, Bloody or black, tarry stools; chills (flutamide only); itching; lower back or side pain (flutamide only); mental depression; numbness, tingling, pain, or muscle weakness in hands, arms, feet, or legs; skin rash; swelling of face, fingers, feet, or lower legs; unusual tiredness or weakness are relatively rare side effects.

It is important to take exact dose of the medicine that your doctor has worked out for you. Patients should continue to take the medicine even if some side effects crop up or even if they start to feel better. Casodex should be stored away from heat, direct sunlight and moisture, away from the reach of the children.
