Ciprobay is an antibiotic drug under the group of quinolones. Ciprobay is a brand name for the generic drug ciprofloxacin, which is well known and widely used in the USA. In Canada and UK, ciprofloxacin is sold under brand names such as Prociflor, Cipro, Cipro XL, Baycip, Ciloxan, Ciflox, Cipro XR, Ciproxin, and of late, Proquin.

In a 1999 study conducted by Iravani, A. et.al and the Urinary tract Infection Group at the Urology Center of Florida, evaluated the efficacy of ciprobay in urinary tract infections (UTI) of women with positive lab results 48 hours before treatment.

The test was done in order to find out and compare the affectivity and safety of using ciprofloxacin two times a day for one week, which is the standard therapy. Ciprofloxacin as the drug of choice is also compared with nitrofurantoin or cotrimoxazole. The patients were given either a 3-day dose of ciprofloxacin or a 7-day treatment with either nitrofurantoin or cotrimoxazole. After the completion of the study, urine samples from patients were studied for clinical and bacterial analysis.

The study concluded that in most of the urinary tract infection cases, the frequent causative agent is the Eschirichia coli or generally the Enterobacteriaceae rods. Ciprofloxacin has proven to be quite efficient in eradicating the bacteria 88%, while 86% for nitrofurantoin and 93% for cotrimoxazole. However, after a 4-6 week follow up on the patients, it was found that ciprofloxacin has a statistically significant higher rate of infection eradication with a value of 91%, while 82% for nitrofurantoin and 79% for cotrimoxazole. Further, the study noted that patients who underwent the cotrimoxazole therapy experienced a higher incidence of adverse side effects as compared to the use of ciprofloxacin. Further, the use of ciprofloxacin in the study had produced a lower incident of nausea in the patient, compared with the other two drugs.
