Hyperlipidemia is a general term for elevated concentrations of any of the lipids (fats) in the plasma, the three main ones being cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoproteins. An excess of lipids in the blood can be due to a disorder of lipid metabolism. However diet also plays an important role, because many foods contain cholesterol and increase its concentration in the blood. Particularly the so called “trans fats” which are used in the preparation of various fast foods are very rich in cholesterol. If blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are too high, there is an increased risk for coronary artery disease as well as many conditions which are induced by blood vessel clogging.

statinsAtorvastatin (trade Name: Lipitor) is an oral drug which belongs to the drug classification called statins which are utilized to lower blood cholesterol. It is also used to stabilize plaques and to inhibit strokes through anti-inflammation and other methods.
Atorvastatin prevents HMG-CoA reductase which is a rate-determining enzyme that can be found in the hepatic tissue that synthesizes mevalonate, a small molecule essential for the production of cholesterol and other derivatives of mevalonate. Through this, the amount of cholesterol produced is decreased and this results in a lower total amount of LDL cholesterol. Its side effects may include headaches, weakness, dizziness, and peripheral edema. Atorvastatin was first produced in 1985 by Bruce Roth while he was working at Parke-Davis Warner-Lambert Company which is now widely known as Pfizer. It is possibly the top-selling drug in the world. TextCrestor (rosuvastatin) is a member of the drug class of statins, used to low down high cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease. Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca markets this drug under the brand name Crestor.

Crestor, which is also known by the name of Rosuvastatin, belongs to the drug class of statins that is used to treat severe cardiovascular conditions like high cholesterol. This medicinal drug was developed by Shionogi and is marketed by Pharmaceutical Company by the name of AstraZeneca as Crestor.

The generic name of Crestor is Crestor Rosuvastatin and it is sold under the brand name of Rosuvastatin generic. In US, Rosuvastatin is known by the name of Crestor and is available in the form of tablets of 10 and 20 mg for oral consumption. Rosuvastatin is similar to other statins in functioning that is, it inhibits the enzyme HMG-Coa reductase. Its time taken to peak the plasma concentration is from three to five hours with respect to oral administration. Continue reading...

AntilipemicLipids or fats in the body are classified into three groups: cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospoholipids. Upon entering the body via the digestive system, dietary lipids from the foods we eat are absorbed and transported throughout the body in the form of protein-lipid complexes known as lipoproteins. The three classes of lipoproteins are low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). Intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL) are lipoproteins with densities between VLDL and LDL.

In predisposed people such as the obese, abnormalities in the levels of lipoproteins can occur, resulting in a condition called hypercholesterolemia. This condition is defined as a state of elevated cholesterol levels, the primary indicator being LDL and total cholesterol.

Lipitor, also known as atorvastatin, makes part of a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors and reduces the levels of “bad” cholesterol – low-density lipoprotein (LDL) - and triglycerides in the blood and increases the levels of “good” cholesterol – high-density lipoprotein (LDL). It is used to treat high-cholesterol and also to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart complications, especially in people with coronary heart disease, type II diabetes or other risk factors.

Rosuvastatin is basically use for the treatment of high cholesterol and to prevent cardiovascular disease. It is a member of class statins. Rosuvastatin works by reducing levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood while increasing levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL). Lowering cholesterol can help prevent heart disease and hardening of arteries that can lead to heart attack, stroke and vascular disease. Rosuvastatin calcium is a synthetic lipid lowering agent approved as a treatment for hypercholesterolemia. It is a part of complete program that also includes diet, exercise and weight control. It is recommended not to take this medication if allergic to rosuvastatin, have liver disease or if you are pregnant or breast feeding a baby.

Blood vesselZocor, also known as Simvastatin, is a cholesterol-lowering drug. Your doctor may prescribe Simvastatin in addition to a cholesterol-lowering diet if your blood cholesterol level is too high, and if you have been unable to lower it by diet alone. In people with high cholesterol and heart disease, Simvastatin reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and "mini-stroke" (transient ischemic attack) and can stave off the need for bypass surgery or angioplasty to clear clogged arteries.

Zocor is a hypolipidemic drug, which means that it lowers the lipid level in the blood. It is a member of the statin group of drugs. Zocor is mainly used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia (high level of cholesterol in blood). FDA approved Zocor in 1997. Continue reading...
