Eulexin Review Article

Eulexin (flutamide is active ingredient) is an antiandrogen used in the treatment of prostate cancer in combination with other drugs such as Lupron. It works in the body by preventing the actions of androgens which are male hormones. Eulexin has replaced bicalutamide drug because it has less side effects and it is also known as Flutamin. Furthermore, this medication is not recommended for women. There are no reports indicating restriction on foods, beverages or activities while taking Eulexin, excepting alcohol which can worsen its side effects. Generally you should take this drug three times a day, but you have to take it exactly how your doctor prescribed it to you.

Eulexin is an antiandrogen indicated for the treatment of prostate cancer and is used in combination with drugs such as Lupron. This drug contains flutamide, which is a nonsteroidal, acetanilid and anti-androgen substance.

Eulexin acts by hampering the actions of male hormones, androgens. This drug is approved for treating locally confined Stage B2-C carcinoma of the prostate along with LHRH agonists and radiation therapy. In the United States, it is marketed for curing advanced (Stage D2) prostate cancer along with LHRH agonists.

Owing to its relatively low side effects, Eulexin is used instead of bicalutamide drug and is not suitable for women. However, alcohol intake might worsen the side effects of this drug, so it should be avoided during Eulexin treatment. Available in 250 mg dosage, usually two tablets/capsules should be taken three times a day, or as prescribed by the doctor.

Its generic name is flutamide, which is also the active ingredient of this drug, and it is manufactured by Schering-Plough Company in India. Besides flutamide, Eulexin capsules consists of an acetanilid, nonsteroidal and orally active anti-androgen ( 2-methyl-N-[4-nitro-3 (trifluoromethyl) phenyl] propanamide). Corn starch, lactose, povidone, magnesium stearate and sodium lauryl sulphate are the inactive ingredients of this drug.

Mechanism of Action

Eulexin works by directly preventing the cancer-promoting activities of androgens, which are male sex hormones, especially testosterone. Blocking androgen helps in controlling the metastatic prostate cancer. The androgen can be blocked to the maximum when Eulexin is administered in combination with an LHRH agonist, which inhibits the growth of cancer.

Side Effects

According to the studies of Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), Eulexin when given with the LHRH agonist did not add any serious side effects, which were experience during radiation therapy alone.

Some of the common side effect experienced by the patients includes hot flashes, diarrhoea, swelling or tenderness of the breasts (gynocomastia), nausea, loss of appetite, decreased sexual desire or ability (impotence), and decreased fertility. Some other side effects are rashes, drowsiness, unusual fatigue, weakness, body swelling (edema), mental/mood changes, easy bleeding or bruising, fever, constant sore throat, bluish skin. Some other rare but serious side effects that can occur are dark urine, yellowing eyes or skin, stomach pain, lumps in breasts, a sunburn-like effect and allergic reactions.

If any of the above-mentioned side effects are noticed or the effects worsen, then one is advised to consult a doctor immediately.

Drug Interactions

The prothrombin time of certain patients tends to increase when they undergo long-term warfarin therapy after starting flutamide. It is recommended that the prothrombin time is observed regularly and the anticoagulant dose should be adjusted as and when required, if Eulexin is administered concurrently with warfarin.

Contraindications

Some severe drug interactions are likely to occur if Eulexin is used for longer period. This drug is contraindicated in patients suffering from serious hepatic impairment and evaluation of baseline hepatic enzymes is recommended before starting the treatment.

Eulexin should not be indicated during pregnancy and overdose is to be avoided. Patients who are hypersensitive to flutamide or other components of this drug, should not take this drug, and a doctor’s prescription is mandatory for any patient. Studies show that around 9% of the patients who received flutamide in combination with medical castration suffered from gynecomastia.

Eulexin notes:
Eulexin drug is known by the eulexin generic name flutamide since it consists of a nonsteroidal, acetanilid and anti-androgen substance known as flutamide. Eulexin (Schering Corporation) is used in combination to LHRH agonists, together which help in controlling locally confined prostate carcinoma of Stage B2-C and Stage D2. As per the eulexin prescribing information, two capsules of eulexin is taken three times a day. This drug works by blocking the cancer promoting actions of the male sex hormones- the androgen and the main sex hormone is testosterone. Therefore, eulexin is also called anti-andrigen and it helps in controlling the metastatic prostate cancer by depriving the action of androgen in the human body. The combination of this drug with LHRH agonists offers maximum blocking of male sex hormone and thus helps in controlling the growth of cancerous cells in the body.

There are some very important side effects that can occur with the usage of eulexin such as diarrhea, hot flashes, nausea, breast swelling or tenderness of the or gynocomastia, loss of appetite, loss of sexual desire, impotence etc. Some chronic but unlikely side effects of the drug include: weakness, drowsiness or fatigue, mood swings, bleeding or bruising, continual sore throat, fever, etc. Many allergic symptoms are also reported with its usage like skin rashes, swelling of the body or edema, dizziness, breathing problems and so on.

Long-term usage of this medicine is associated with some very serious drug interactions. Eulexin should be avoided during pregnancy and overdose of the medicine is equally dangerous. This drug is also contradicted in patients suffering from hepatic impairment and hypersensitive to flutamide or to similar components. Therefore, never use this drug without prescription, that too after carefully going through the eulexin package insert information. You can buy eulexin online from reliable drug specialist after proper consultation with your health provider.
