E vitamin Review Article

Vitamin E has lots of several functions, such as protecting cell membranes, protecting your skin from ultraviolet light, allowing cells to communicate effectively, preventing cell damage from free radicals and it also helps protect against prostate cancer and the Alzheimer disease. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant which stops the production of reactive oxygen species which are formed when fat undergoes oxidant. Vitamin E has some side effects, such as: swelling of the face, lips or tongue, allergic reactions such as skin rash, dizziness, headache, stomach pains, unusual bleeding, changes in vision, nausea or vomiting.

Anti-Aging Vitamin

If you donít take any other vitamins at all, you should definitely take vitamin E. Itís impossible to get enough vitamin E just from food in order to be able to fight cancer or any other similar disease unless, of course, you start consuming more than 5,000 calories a day, mainly fats.

Vitamin E is an extraordinary protection against the aging process. It is an antioxidant that fights free radicals which means that you need it more than anything else. If you ask researchers anywhere in the world about the most efficient vitamin against aging, almost every single one of them will advise you to take α-tocopherol, a common variant of vitamin E . The reason for that is the ability of vitamin E to slow down the aging process, ability which has already become a legend. The truth is that the new incredible information available on Vitamin E shattered the faith of conventional medicine in the fact that food contains everything that a person needs. Many people believe that food supplements containing vitamin E are a must when it comes to aging issues that the modern civilization is facing.

How vitamin E fights aging

Vitamin E fights cancer

Following the results of a recent study, conducted on a sample group of 35,000 women from Iowa, the risk of colon cancer occurrence decreased by 68% in women under the age of 65 who took a greater amount of vitamin E, primarily supplements.

The low level of Vitamin E in the blood doubles the chances that a person would develop one form of cancer or another. This was the conclusion of a large study conducted in Finland.

Researchers from the National Cancer Institute claim that constant administration of vitamin E during a period of six months can reduce the risk of intraoral and throat cancer by 50%. Another study conducted at Yale University showed that the administration of additional doses of vitamin E reduced the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers by 50%.

The anti-cancer effect is primarily attributed to the stimulation of the immune system exercised by vitamin E. However, new studies show that vitamin E directly inhibits the growth of cancer cells and it doesnít only prevent cancer development.

Vitamin E rejuvenates old arteries.

In monkeys, which were given 108 IU of vitamin E per day for three years in a row, the clogging of arteries caused by high-fat diets, decelerated and even started to subside. These data were obtained during a study conducted at the Atherosclerosis Research Laboratory of the University of Mississippi. Throughout the experiment, the animals were constantly fed fatty foods. In those monkeys who concomitantly received vitamin E, 5-fold a reduction in the clogging of arteries was observed. Not only that but in some monkeys with advanced vascular diseases, vitamin E cleared almost 60% of plaques on the arteries. Thrombus formation became less frequent and even decreased from the average 35% to 15% within two years!

It becomes more and more clear that vitamin E can have the same effect on humans. This is confirmed by the research of Howard Houlis from the University Of Southern California School Of Medicine, which showed that vitamin E inhibited the formation of arterial plaques in middle-aged men who underwent surgery to clean out the vessels. The plaque formation on the arteries of the individuals who have been taking at least 100 IU of vitamin E per day (concomitantly with other drugs) for two years was not as significant as in the arteries of the individuals who received smaller amounts of vitamin E. Furthermore, X-rays showed that existing plaque even reduced in the arteries of some people who took vitamin E, which means that atherosclerosis can be treated.

Vitamin E saved men, too. A study conducted on 40, 000 middle-aged men showed that the risk of serious cardio-vascular diseases, including heart attacks, decreased by 37% in those men who took more than 100 IU of vitamin E every day for over two years. However, Vitamin E doesnít have an immediate effect though. Harvard study suggests that its protective properties can be proved only after a minimum period of two years of constant administration.

The important fact is that the experts from Harvard, Dr. Mayr Stampfer and Dr. Eric Rimm, emphasize that the amount of vitamin E from food aliments is not enough to prevent heart attacks. Consequently, the two authors advise on taking Vitamin E supplements, which is exactly what the two of them do. However, following the results of their study, any dose exceeding 250 IU no longer reduces the chance of a heart attack.

Vitamin E fights heart attacks

The scientific community was stunned by the results of two recent large-scale studies conducted at Harvard, which showed that vitamin E dramatically reduces the risk of heart diseases. Letís take the data on women. Out of the eighty-seven thousand nurses. The study performed on women showed that the occurrence of heart disease was diminished by 41% in women who took 100 - 250 IU of vitamin E daily for more than two years as compared to those who didnít take any vitamin E at all. Moreover, in women who took vitamin E, the risk of stroke decreased by 29%, while total mortality was reduced by 13%.

Vitamin E removes plaques and blood clots from the arteries

Vitamin E fights the most terrifying effects of aging, atherosclerosis- the gradual clogging and solidification of arteries-which stems in youth, continues to develop in middle age, and kills in old age. Every year, atherosclerosis kills over 500, 000 Americans in their elder years. According to the current data, atherosclerosis is largely attributed to the fact that ďbadĒ cholesterol, LDL, which is found in the blood, undergoes chemical changes, i.e. it is oxidized, and then it becomes toxic due to the attack of free radicals. If no oxidation of LDL occurs, "bad" cholesterol will not settle on the walls of the arteries, and, therefore, plaques will not form, and arteries will not clog up. Vitamin E can prevent that from happening That is exactly what vitamin E does in a very efficient manner, far better than any other antioxidant vitamin. Vitamin E inhibits unwanted oxidation, thus, eliminating the very cause of coronary artery disease.

The study conducted by Ishvarlalem Jalal from Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas University of Texas revealed that administration of 800 IU of vitamin E on a daily basis for three months reduced LDL oxidation by as much as 40%. Vitamin E decreased the ability of LDL to damage the arteries and eventually induce heart illness. "It is clear that vitamin E is the most powerful antioxidant to fight LDL oxidationĒ, doctor Ishvarlalem Jalal stated. He found that at least 400 IU of vitamin E should be administered per day in order to have a somewhat significant effect on the level of LDL oxidation.

Q: Do you need to take vitamin E?

Answer: If the results of Harvard study are correct, you will miss a lot on a lot of benefits if you donít follow this advice. "The health risks caused by failure to take vitamin E were found to be equivalent to the health risks triggered by smoking," marvelled Dr. Rimm.

The study showed that the benefit of vitamin E is even greater than the benefit brought by a drop in blood pressure and blood cholesterol level reduction! The study showed that the benefits of the administration of Vitamin E are even greater than those of the reduction of cholesterol and blood pressure level. The World Health Organization carried out a large-scale study pertaining to health protection in 16 European cities, which showed that high blood levels of vitamin E are more likely to reduce the chance of fatal heart attacks than the cholesterol level reduction.

Dr. Simin Meidani, an immunologist and specialist in nutrition from Tufts University, tested vitamin E supplements (in doses of either 400 or 800 IU per day) in people over 60 years of age. The immune system of patients had weakened over the years, but, according to the researcher, due to vitamin E, the immune system started to strengthen and "nearly reached the level of a young body." Although the vitamin didnít exert the desired effect on everyone, in the majority of patients, the revival of the immune system was phenomenal. Such functions of the immune system as creation of white blood cells that fight infections, improved from 10 to 50% within only thirty days! Some other functions have improved even by 80-90%.

Just think about that Ė Dr. Meidani believes that vitamin E protects the fats in the membranes of the immune system cells from being oxidized by the free radicals. Such cells are particularly vulnerable. Mind you, Still, according to accepted standards, vitamin E deficiency was not observed in such patients. In order to restore immune functions, older people need more vitamin E than just "average" amounts. Mega-doses of vitamin E improved the functions of the immune system of young people as well, although not as significantly as in the case of elder people.

Hundreds of thousands of people in this country die from heart diseases and cancer. I think the evidence pertaining to the fact that vitamin E can alleviate all the suffering and miseries that come along with these illnesses is very strong, and there are practically no arguments against its use. Vitamin E doesnít even cost much.
Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg,

Antioxidants Research Laboratory Head at Tufts University
