December 17, 2009 BIRMINGHAM, Alabama. Researchers of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have discovered that glucose levels are linked to lifespan of healthy and precancerous lung cancer cells. The research further proves the benefits of caloric restriction for aging and cancer.
In the experiment conducted by researchers of UAB, healthy and cancerous cells of lung were grown in flasks with high as well as low glucose concentration. To the surprise of researchers, the healthy cells life span was found to be more in glucose restricted medium as compared to high glucose medium and opposite was found for cancerous cells i.e they tend to die in low glucose medium and had accelerated growth in high glucose medium.
The researchers found that there are two genes responsible for the experiment results. The first gene is telomerase which codes for enzyme responsible for the indefinite growth of cells and the second gene is P16 which codes for anticancer protein. In high glucose medium, the telomerase becomes active, thereby giving boost to cancer while P 16 gene becomes active in glucose scarcity helping the body to get rid of cancer cells. Thus the healthy cells are fine in low glucose medium while the cancer cells die.
The study verifies the benefits of caloric restriction in health as well as anticancer effects. This was the first study done on human cells. Women belonging to the age group of 50 and study entry with a BMI increase of 5kg/m2 were at a 56 percent risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer. Therefore BMI increase before and after the age of50 individually contributed to increased risk of post menopausal breast cancer.
