The major active ingredients of fish oil are two essential polyunsaturated so-called omega-3 fatty acids: EPA (eicosapentaenic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenic acid), which cannot be produced by the human organism. Alpha-linolenic acid can be converted to EPA and DHA in the body, but the conversion is quite inefficient especially in older people. The administration of these polyunsaturated fatty acids as treatment courses lowers blood lipid and cholesterol levels, improves the rheological properties of the blood and exerts a favorable effect on blood coagulation process.

Fish oils (EPA and DHA) play a crucial role in the prevention of atherosclerosis, heart attack, depression, and cancer.

Recognizing the unique benefits of EPA and DHA and the serious consequences of a deficiency the US National Institutes of Health recently published Recommended Daily Intakes of fatty acids. They recommend a total daily intake of 650 mg of EPA and DHA, 2.22 g/day of alpha-linolenic acid and 4.44 g/day of linoleic acid. Saturated fat intake should not exceed 8 per cent of total calorie intake or about 18 g/day.

Proposed use:

Omega-3 fatty acid levels related to antiaging

According to the researchers from University of California, San Francisco, higher levels of omega-3 fatty acid in blood is related to shortening of telomere length, a chromosome marker of biological aging.

Increased dietary intake of omega 3 fatty acids(docosahexaenoic acid, DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA) is associated with prolonged survival in patients with coronary heart disease. However, the mechanisms for this protective effect are not fully understood. Telomeres are structures at the end of a chromosome involved in the replication and stability of the chromosome. Genetic factors and environmental stress can shorten the length of the telomere which is the marker of biological age.

In the study, 608 outpatients with stable coronary artery disease were recruited from the Heart and Soul Study between September 2000 and December 2002 and followed till January 2009. Difference in Leukocyte telomere length was found at the beginning of the study and after 5 years of follow up using multivariable models. It was found that individuals in the lowest quartile of DHA+EPA experienced most rapid rate of telomere shortening, whereas those in the highest quartile experienced the slowest rate of telomere shortening. Each standard deviation increase in DHA+EPA levels was associated with a 32 percent reduction in the odds of telomere shortening.
This clearly indicates that there is inverse relationship between blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids and the rate of telomere shortening.

The study presented in Journal of the American Medical Association explains that omega-3s slows down the shortening of telomeres suggesting that it may give resistance against aging.

Initially patients with cardiovascular disease taking high dietary intake of marine omega-3s survive for a longer time as compared to patients not taking enough omega-3s diet. The latest study was conducted on 608 patients for 5 years to check the association between the shortening of telomeres and intake of omega-3 fatty acids. The researchers found that the subjects with least amount of omega-3s shows the shortening of telomeres at rapid rate while those on high omega-3s diet shows slowest rate of telomere shortening.
