Japanese government urgent distribute potassium iodide within 12 miles of the nuclear plant. In the year 2011, Japan was hit by a disastrous and devastating tsunami which results into a massive explosion in a nuclear reactor at Fukushima. The safety guard officials admitted that the Japanese government lately realized that it was a urgent need to distribute potassium iodide pills that would have help to reduce the chances of thyroid cancer to those living within 12 miles of the nuclear plant. Later the government of United States Of America made available the pills of potassium iodide for their personnel and their dependents living in Tokyo and other parts of Japan.

In the year 1982, the FDA of United States Of America approved potassium iodide to protect thyroid glands from radioactive iodine which emerges from accidental event or attack on nuclear power plant. Of all this products, iodine is the most common and very dangerous to the thyroid gland as it may lead to thyroid cancer. By consuming this compound prior to exposure prevents radioiodine uptake by thyroid. The protective effect of potassium iodide lasts for almost 24 hours. Generally the dose of this compound is taken on daily basis till the risk of significant exposure to radioiodine no longer exists. 130 mg of potassium iodide provides 100mg of iodine.
