Nootropil (Piracetam): The Genius Maker?

For many decades, and even centuries, people have been in search of a substance that can make them wiser. A substance that can help them excel when it comes to cognitive functions. The Chinese people were the ones who first made use of a “smart drug” to enhance their mental skills and brain power. In their case, they used herbal medicines which include gotu kola, ginkgo biloba, and the ever popular ginseng. They also used different herbal teas to produce their own version of a “smart drug”. By using these substances, they were able to work for more hours than usual, with increased alertness, and increased libido.

However, in the modern days, people sought more knowledge and wisdom. The establishment of schools and universities offered the opportunity to learn about almost anything. There are a lot of things to known, discovered, and memorized. Thus, people unceasingly sought for a drug that will greatly enhance their mental capabilities. In 1964, Piracetam was brought into light by a Roman chemist and psychologist, Dr. Cornelius E. Giurgea. He synthesized Piracetam which was considered to be the first “smart drug”.

What exactly is A Smart Drug?

“Smart Drugs” or Nootropics (also known as cognitive and memory enhancers) are substances—supplements, medications, functional foods, etc. — that are believed to enhance cognitive functions which include attention, concentration, learning, alertness, and memory.

Piracetam is a nootropic drug which when ingested by healthy individuals, is believed to stimulate the central nervous system and boost cognitive functions such as intelligence, memory, alertness, concentration, and attention. Its mechanisms of action are to help supply the brain with oxygen and neurochemicals, and to incite the growth of nerves. Dr. Giurgea stated that nootropics should be able to boost memory and learning, improve the learned memories and behaviors’ resistance to disruptive conditions, guard the brain from both chemical and physical damages, boost the effectiveness of the tonic cortical or subcortical control systems, not have the common pharmacology of similar psychotropic medications, and have very little side effects and exceptionally low toxicity.

Nootropil helps prevent CVA

Nootropil (Generic Name: Piracetam) can help prevent CVA (otherwise known as Cardiovascular Accident or stroke). CVA or stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is discontinuous. It, then, leads to inadequate supply of oxygen to the brain and causes brain cells to die. This may lead to speech impairment, paralysis, coma, and even death. Nootropil helps prevent this since one of its mechanisms of action is to supply the brain with oxygen and neurochemicals.

Recovery from speech impairment due to stroke (also known as Aphasia) can be improved by Piracetam. According to Berthier (2005), “Several placebo-controlled trials suggest that Piracetam is effective in recovery from aphasia when started soon after the stroke, but its efficacy vanishes in patients with chronic aphasia.” Due to the same effect, Nootropil also aids in the restoration of bodily functions, such as speech, limbs, and consciousness of individuals with chronic and acute cerebral ischaemia which is a condition of having decreased blood flow to the brain.

Nootropil aids in the improvement of age-related illnesses and impairments

Since it has brain boosting effects, Nootropil slows the decline of mental functions related to aging which include dementia due to changes in aging that result in shrinking and deterioration of tissues and organs and Alzheimer’s disease. With the same function, it has also increased alertness and IQ of elderly patients of psychiatry who have cerebral impairment that is mild and diffused.

Nootropil can cure alcoholism and alcohol withdrawal symptoms

It has been proven by several studies that Piracetam can be utilized successfully for the treatment of chronic alcoholism. It is also used to treat symptoms of alcohol withdrawal which is due to sudden discontinuation of alcohol intake after a long period of alcoholism. These symptoms may include anxiety, fatigue, depression, nausea, headache, vomiting, paleness, dilated pupils, insomnia, rapid heartbeat, dilated pupils, abnormal movements, and others.

Nootropil helps treat dyslexic children

Nootropil has been found to raise the accuracy and speed when reading, memory, ability to learn verbally, reading comprehension, and ability to spell and write in children suffering from dyslexia. This certain effect may also be caused by its ability to improve cognitive functions.

Nootropil as an anti-convulsant

As found in studies, when used with other anti-epileptic drugs, Piracetam potentiates the drug’s anti-convulsant feat and purges the negative effects on the brain that is produced by the anti-epileptic drug. There is a synergistic effect when Piracetam is combined with an anticonvulsant drug for treating epilepsy and seizures

Nootropil as an anti-aging substance

For non-deteriorated people who are suffering from forgetfulness in their middle-age, Piracetam was found to boost their cognitive performance. On the other hand, In older out-patients who have impaired memory due to their old age, Piracetam was observed to have a major effect in enhancing their recall and memory.

Moreover, the normal slowing of the brain’s electrical activity due to aging (seen in EEG or electroencephalogram) is reversed by Piracetam. It increases the fast electrical activity of the brain and decreases its slow electrical activity while at the same time enhancing attention, alertness, and memory.

Dosage and Cautions

For individuals who are just starting to take Piracetam, their daily dosage should be three 800mg tablets that will be taken twice a day. After a month, the daily dosage should be decreased to one or two tablets which will also be taken twice a day.

For individuals who are taking Piracetam with other nootropics or other nutrition products for the brain, it should be kept in mind that these drugs/products are synergistic. Their individual dosages must be lessened when they are combined to avoid potential side effects, such as headache and nausea.
