Adalat Adalat (generic name: nifedipine) is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It is primarily used as an antihypertensive and antianginal (especially in the case of Prinzmetal’s angina). Recently, a wide array of other uses of this drug has been discovered, such as premature labor, Raynaud’s phenomenon, and painful contractions of the esophagus in tetanus and cancer patients. It is also widely used for a small division of pulmonary hypertension patients with symptoms responding to calcium channel blockers.
Adalat is classified as a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used as an antianginal for conditions such as Prinzmetal’s angine as well as a antihypertensive. After some recent time, it has also been experimentally prescribed with premature labor, Raynaud’s phenomenon and muscle spasms as exhibited with esophageal cancer or tetanus. On some cases, doctors prescribe Adalat to be used for pulmonary hypertension which affects respiratory capacity. The continued use is determined through any observable improvements in breathing or elimination of dizziness and other associated symptoms.
Adamantan and Viregyt are European brand names for the antiviral drug amantadine (generic name). Amantadine is an antiviral drug which can prevent virus replication in cells. It works by preventing the virus’ processes of invading and multiplying inside cells and is therefore considered as preventive rather than curative medication. To be able to render its positive effects on a person, it must be taken before the infection begins. A common warning sign that the intake of Adamantan is already too late includes fever. Over the recent years, the secondary use of Adamantan is for Parkinson’s disease. Several clinical trials have shown that it may stop the progress or perhaps may even revert the symptoms of the disease which mainly affects the motor skills of the patient. This movement disorder is called dyskinesia. In a double-blind, randomized clinical trial, there were 36 patients of Parkinson’s disease and were divided into two groups for 300 mg of Adamantan and placebo per day in 27 days. Around 60% to 70% of the participants in the study who were affected with Parkinson’s disease to the stage of suffering dyskinesia already have shown improvement thereby demonstrating Adamantan’s effectiveness. This was evaluated after 15 days with the Rush Dyskinesia Rating Scale. After the trial was stopped, the researchers then used the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part IV a, IV b and III. Allegra Allegra or Telfast (generic name: fexofenadine) is an antihistamine which is used to reduce the symptoms of hay fever, seasonal allergic rhinitis, and other types of allergies and for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria. Like other antihistamines, this drug prevents the action of histamine on the eyes and nose and it is taken to relieve symptoms of allergies including runny nose, watery and itchy eyes, sneezing, and itchy throat. Since it is not a therapeutic drug, fexofenadine only prevents the aggravation of urticaria and rhinitis but does not really cure it. The usual side effects of the drug include nausea, headache, dizziness, sleepiness, nervousness, and drowsiness. However, since fenoxadine is similar to other antihistamines that belong to the second and third-generation, it does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore causes less drowsiness than histamine-receptor antagonists that belong to the first generation.
Allegra is a trademark name for Fexofenadine which is an antihistamine drug class prescribed for Hay fever or better known as allergic rhinitis and other allergy attacks. It is considered as a second and third generation group of antihistamine drugs which does not infiltrate the blood-brain barrier in an instant. This effect is avoided so as not to induce drowsiness to the person who had taken the drug. However, it is still effective in preventing allergy symptoms and antagonist to the H1 receptor by blocking it. Allegra should only be used before the attack of allergy to relieve the symptoms but it will not treat Hay Fever or Urticaria itself. Continue reading...

It is a synthetic antiviral drug which can also be used for treating extrapyramidal reactions, post-herpetic neuralgia, shaking and stiffness that occur from other medications used for mental emotional and nervous conditions. This drug promotes more controlled body movement through restoring control of muscles. Because a virus cannot replicate outside a living body, its replication is dependent on its ability to invade and take over other living cells. Amantadine acts by preventing the virus from taking over the host cell by preventing it from releasing its nucleic acid into the potential host cell. Amantadine promotes normal body movements by improving control over muscles and reduces stiffness of the muscles. It is also used in the treatment of the shaking and stiffness associated with certain other medicaments used in the treatment of mental, nervous and emotional conditions. Continue reading...

Aminoguanidine Aminoguanidine also known as Pimagedine is a drug that is capable of slowing down the aging process. It is commonly regarded that age-related changes in body are due to the cross-linking or glycosylation of protein. This drug is capable of protecting body-making-up proteins including the skin (elastin and collagen), nerves, eye lens, and kidney proteins from linking by means of combining itself with the substances that cause links. This way, it stops the aging of the body and prevents thickening of the arteries, senile cataracts, age-related yellowing and toughening of the skin, some cancers, and damage to the immune system. The effects of Aminoguanidine show that it may be capable of at least slowing the development of the aforementioned age-related conditions. It is proven that this drug has the ability of reducing the capacity of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), otherwise known as “bad cholesterol”, to stick to the wall of blood vessels which result to a less likely coagulation of blood platelets and avoidance of dangerous atherosclerotic plaques formation. Aminoguanidine is also able to inhibit age-related heart enlargement and irregular glucose metabolism which results in development of diabetes in old age. To a large extent, the visible effects of skin ageing owes to the formation of AGEs.
Aminoguanidine (aka Pimagedine) is a drug highly recognised for its anti-aging benefits.
One of the main causes of mammalian aging is known to begin with a reaction between glucose and other reducing sugars and the amine residues of proteins. This is a reaction that is not regulated by any enzymes and is called glycation (or Maillard reaction; this reaction is quite known in cooking as a form of “browning” and it gives a distinctive taste and a caramel colour to foods). The resulting glycoprotein (i.e. the sugar + protein formation) can further react with other proteins to form cross-links that are difficult for the body’s enzymes to break; so aggregations are gradually formed in various places inside the body. These aggregations are called AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products). Continue reading...

Aricept Aricept (Generic Name: Donepezil) is an oral drug used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. It belongs to the drug classification termed cholinesterase inhibitors which also include tacrine (Cognex). It is deemed by scientists that Alzheimer’s disease may be due to a deficiency in chemicals, specifically neurotransmitters, used by nerves which are inside the brain to communicate with each other. Aracept prevents acetylcholunesterase, an enzyme that causes the obliteration of one neurotransmitter which is acetylcholine. This results in more concentrations of acetylcholine in the brain. This condition is deemed to be the cause of the improvement observed during the treatment with Donepezil. Every now and then, this drug is being utilized by healthy individuals as a brain booster. It is found to be effective in memory enhancement and aids in learning. : Continue reading...
Arimidex Arimidex (Generic Name: Anastrozole) is a medication used for the treatment of breast cancer post-surgery and metastases in women who are post-menopausal. This drug inhibits the enzyme aromatase which works by converting androgens into estrogens in the peripheral tissues. Via competitive inhibition, the drug reversibly binds to aromatase. Through this mechanism, Anastrozole works by interrupting a crucial step in the body’s production of estrogen. Certain breast cancer cells necessitate estrogen to enable them to grow. Thus, the growth of the breast cancer cells is suppressed by eliminating estrogen. The most common side effect associated with Anastrozole is bone weakness. Women who started using it after two years of using Tamoxifen had more frequent incidence of fractures compared to those who continued taking Tamoxifen. This drug may be used with statins which can strengthen the bone to avoid fractures and cardiovascular risks. Continue reading...

Azopt Azopt (Genric Name: Brinzolamide) is used to lessen intraocular pressure or the pressure inside the eye in individuals suffering from ocular hypertension, wherein the pressure inside the eye is elevated or higher than normal, or open-angle glaucoma, an illness wherein the pressure inside the eye is raised since fluid cannot be drained out of the eye. This drug is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It works by inhibiting an enzyme termed carbonic anhydrase that synthesizes bicarbonate ions in the body. Bicarbonate is essential in the production of the aqueous humour which is the watery fluid inside the eye. By preventing the synthesis of bicorbonate in the eye, Azopt dekays the creation of aqueous humour and thus reduces the pressure inside the eye. Common side effects include headache, dysgeusia, inflammation of the eyelids, eye irritation, blurred vision, eye discharge, dry eye, itchy eyes, red eye, dry mouth, and sensation of a foreign body in the eyes.
Azopt is an ocular (eye) drug used to treat eye problems such as glaucoma which results in an increased intraocular pressure. This rise in pressure could be due to fluid retention within the eye as it occurs in glaucoma or due to ocular hypertension. Azopt acts by inhibiting the action of carbonic anhydrase which synthesizes bicarbonate ions. These ions are involved in the process of fluid formation within the eye. By inhibiting the action of carboic anhydrase, azopt prevents the build-up of pressure in the eyes due to ocular fluid retention. Continue reading...
B-vitamin complex B-vitamins belong to the group of vitamins that are soluble in water and play crucial roles in the process of cell metabolism. In the past, it was believed that B-vitamins are a single vitamin similar to Vitamin A, Vitamin C, etc. and was called Vitamin B. It was later discovered that B-vitamins are chemically diverse vitamins that are usually present in the same foods (usually, whole unprocessed foods). Thus, a supplement that contains all the eight B-vitamins is referred to as B-vitamin complex. Combivir The active ingredients of Combivir are lamivudine and zidovudine. Both these belong in non-the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) class of antiretroviral drugs.
The two ingredients have been shown to act synergistically against HIV.
HIV is a retrovirus: it holds all its genetic information in the form of RNA. When it infects a host cell, the RNA gets copied into DNA by an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. In the form of DNA, the viral genetic code can integrate itself into its host’s own DNA. Then, as the host’s DNA is copied into RNA and then proteins are produced according to the code, the viral DNA gets copied along, and produces its own proteins. The viral proteins together with viral RNA then join to make up more viruses. Lamivudine and zidovudine both work by inhibiting the action of reverse transcriptase, thus inhibiting the propagation of HIV.
Coadministration of lamivudine and zidovudine was shown to decrease the levels of HIV RNA in the body, and to increase the levels of CD4+ cells (cells of our immune system and one of the main targets of HIV – their levels normally decrease after an HIV infection).
Competact Competact (Actoplus Met) approved in 2005. It’s a combination therapy with two active components, pioglitazone (a thiazolidinedione) and metformin (a biguanides). Both drugs are classified as insulin sensitizers. It is the first and only fixed-dose combination approved with the extended release form of metformin. It is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus,
Prior to approval, this drug did not have any efficacy studies. But its separate components, metformin and pioglitazone, have long been established for its safety and efficacy. The separate approvals of the two drugs were used as the combination drug’s basis for approval. Concerns regarding the combination drug were addressed with two clinical studies proving that co administration of the two tablets (Glucophage and Actos) is safe and effective. A study made by Seufert (2006) has found that the two separate drugs is bioequivalent with a single Competact.

This medication should be taken by mouth usually in combination with the prescribed dose of levodopa or cardiopa and up to 8 times a day. Your doctor will prescribe you this medication based on your general medical condition, response to therapy and liver function.
Coverex Coverex is an ACE inhibitor. Angiotensin II is very potent chemical that causes the muscles surrounding the blood vessels to contract and so doing it narrows the blood vessels. Consequently, when blood vessels get narrowed, it increases your blood pressure and turns down to Hypertension. Angiotensin II is formed from angiotensin I in the blood by the enzyme, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). ACE inhibitors are medications that slow (inhibit) the activity of the enzyme, which decreases the production of angiotensin II. As a result, when blood vessels enlarge or dilate, the blood pressure is reduced. At this stage, it makes easier for the heart to pump blood normally and in contrast it prevents from heart failure diseases. Thus, the rampant and raging of kidney disease due to high blood pressure or diabetes is slowed and getting prevented.
Coverex (Perindopril erbumine) and hypertension
In recent time, World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that high blood pressure (Hypertension) and Diabetes appeared to be two of the most dangerous disease, especially to elders and individuals who have kidney problems. Global statistic records that 72 million - or one in three adults - have high blood pressure. Prevalence rates are steadily rising, from a rate of 25%, or 50 million adults, between 1988 and 1994 to 29%, or 65 million people by 2002 (U.S. Government data); Continue reading...

Cycloastragenol (TA-65 active substance) Cycloastragenol (main ingredient in TA-65) is a clinically-proven telomerase activator, naturally-occurring single molecule extracted from the root of an herb. TA-65 adds back base pairs of telomeric DNA that have been lost in the aging process. This lengthening of telomeres protects chromosomes from damage, essentially protecting the cells where telomerase is activated from age-related decline.
What is TA-65? And why use such a code name? From Geron's patent document, it is clear that that cycloastragenol and Astragaloside IV are proved to be effective in lengthening the telomere. The question is: why Geron did not disclose what is the most effective ingredient in TA-65? The thoughtful and knowledgeable guess is that the magic ingredient is a natural molecule which can not be patented. Many reference and discussions also prove that the active ingredient of TA-65 is cycloastragenol at 98% purity. TA-65's dosage varies from 1 to 4 capsules daily. Telomerase activation Sciences,Inc. (T.A. Sciences) is the only company to dedicate its researchand development exclusively to telomeraseactivation. T.A. Sciences was founded by Noel Thomas Patton in 2002 with the express purpose of prolonging the human healthspan by extending telomeres. TA-65 provides a unique solution to the problem of shortening telomeres as the only telomerase activating product that is scientifically proven to lengthen short telomeres and rejuvenate aging cells.

Glibenclamide belongs to a drug classification termed Sulfonylureas. By causing the pancreas to release insulin and helping the body use the released insulin effectively, this drug is able to decrease blood sugar. However, it is necessary for the pancreas to produce insulin first before this medication can function. Thus, it is not used for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes wherein the pancreas cannot produce insulin. Continue reading...
Diflucan Diflucan (generic name: fluconazole) is an antifungal drug used to treat the fungal infections like yeast infections of the vagina, throat, esophagus, lungs, mouth and other organs. It is also used to treat the meningitis caused by fungus. Diflucan (fluconazole) is also used to prevent the yeast infections in patients who are undergoing the treatment with the chemotherapy and radiotherapy before a bone marrow transplant as there is risk of yeast infections during this treatment. Diflucan (fluconazole) is used to prevent both the systemic as well as the superficial fungal infections. b>Mechanism of action Diflucan (fluconazole) inhibits the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme 14α-demethylase. The demethylase enzyme which is present in the human body is less sensitive to the Diflucan (fluconazole) thus Diflucan (fluconazole) only inhibits the demethylase enzyme found in the fungus. The inhibition of fungal demethylase by Diflucan (fluconazole) ultimately leads to the inhibition of ergosterol synthesis from the lanosterol. As there is no ergosterol synthesis thus the fungal cytoplasmic membrane becomes weaken and the cellular permeability of fungus is increased and thus leakage of cellular components occurs which leads to the death of the fungus. (Borgers., et al 1980). Continue reading...
Doxycycline Doxycyline is an antibiotic which fights bacteria in the body and it is used to treat many bacterial infections, such as acne, chalmydia, gum disease, urinary tract infections and many others. The alcohol intake can stimulate the liver to metabolise doxycycline, so alcoholics may have reduced blood-levels of this antibiotic. Alcohol is not usually affecting the people who drink moderately and it can sometimes have positive effect in this case. In people who drink heavily the total intake of doxycyxline and the separate dosages should be increased. Furthermore, you should not take doxycycline if you are pregnant because it can affect the unborn baby or cause him a permanent tooth discolouration later in life. Doxycycline is a man made semi-synthetic drug which belongs to the classification of tetracyclines in antibiotics. Evista Estrogenes are main female hormones, which level is decreasing after the menopause or ovary removal. They also regulate bone turnover, and its decrease leads to osteoporosis; a condition leading to a decrease in bone density and weakened bones. Evista (raloxifene) slows this weakening, by decreasing bone turnover and increasing bone density. This leads to a decreased risk of fractures. EVISTA is currently the only approved medicine proven to reduce the risk of spinal fractures due to osteoporosis and the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women suffering with osteoporosis.
Exelon Exelon also known as rivastigmine tartrate is basically using for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia of Alzheimer’s type usually associated with Parkinson’s disease. The dementia of Parkinson’s disease is characterized by effecting memory retrieval and attention in patients with diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and it works by preventing the breakdown of the acetylcholine chemical. People suffering from dementia have lower levels of this chemical which is important for the process of memory, thinking and reasoning. The use of Exelon is associated with significant a gastrointestinal adverse reaction which includes vomiting, anorexia weight loss and nausea. For this reason it is important that the usual dose should be started with 1.5 mg of BID and titrated to their maintenance dose.
Fareston Fareston (generic name toremifene) is used to slow down the growth of metastatic breast cancer which has spread from the original tumour. It works by blocking estrogen from reaching cancer cells. Some types of breast cancer require estrogen to grow. Unlike chemotherapy, fareston does not actually destroy cancer cells. Fareston is also preventing the development of prostate cancer. The recommended dosage of fareston is 60 mg once a day or as prescribed by doctor. Fareston was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in October 1995.

Femara Femara (generic name letrozole) is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor that has been used for the adjuvant treatment of hormonally-responsive breast cancer. It works by reducing the total amount of estrogen produced primarily in the body which helps to starve cancer cells by depriving them of estrogen. The related agent to femara is anastrazole. It has also been used to treat endometriosis. Femara pcos has been use off label for ovarian stimulation by fertility doctors. The recommended dosage of femara is 2.5 mg tablet a day or as prescribed by doctor. Generally it is taken with or without food. Brand-name Femara is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. However, the medication is also available in generic form.
Fish oil The major active ingredients of fish oil are two essential polyunsaturated so-called omega-3 fatty acids: EPA (eicosapentaenic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenic acid), which cannot be produced by the human organism. Alpha-linolenic acid can be converted to EPA and DHA in the body, but the conversion is quite inefficient especially in older people. The administration of these polyunsaturated fatty acids as treatment courses lowers blood lipid and cholesterol levels, improves the rheological properties of the blood and exerts a favorable effect on blood coagulation process.
Fish oils (EPA and DHA) play a crucial role in the prevention of atherosclerosis, heart attack, depression, and cancer.
Recognizing the unique benefits of EPA and DHA and the serious consequences of a deficiency the US National Institutes of Health recently published Recommended Daily Intakes of fatty acids. They recommend a total daily intake of 650 mg of EPA and DHA, 2.22 g/day of alpha-linolenic acid and 4.44 g/day of linoleic acid. Saturated fat intake should not exceed 8 per cent of total calorie intake or about 18 g/day.
Key items: body fish oil, prescription fish oil, good fish oil, fish oil mg, fish oil effects, oil fish.
Flomax Flomax belongs to a group of alpha adrenergic blockers and is used for the treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The recommended dosage is 0.4 mg per day. Flomax works by relaxing the muscles of prostate and bladder neck there by making it easier to urinate, because in men urethra, the tube which carries urine from the bladder to the penis travels through the prostate gland. When men get older, the prostate gland enlarges and the muscle cells within the prostate gland and the neck of the bladder, which control the flow of urine, tighten. It is recommended not to use this medication if allergic to tamsulosin.
Fluconazole Fluconazole is used to prevent both the systemic as well as the superficial fungal infections. It is commonly marketed under the brand name Trican or Diflucan.
Mechanism of action
Like other imidazole- and triazole-class antifungals, fluconazole inhibits the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme 14¦?-demethylase. Mammalian demethylase activity is much less sensitive to fluconazole than fungal demethylase. This inhibition prevents the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cytoplasmic membrane, and subsequent accumulation of 14¦?-methyl sterols. Fluconazole is primarily fungistatic, however may be fungicidal against certain organisms in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, when fluconazole was in development at Pfizer it was decided early in the process to avoid producing any chiral centers in the drug so that subsequent synthesis and purification did not encounter difficulties with enantiomer separation and associated variations in biological effect. A number of related compounds were found to be extremely potent teratogens and subsequently discarded. Continue reading...
Folic Acid Folate is an essential vitamin that is also known as folic acid and folacin. The synthetic form of the vitamin (folic acid), pteroylglutamic acid, is seldom found naturally in food.
Vitamin B9 (folic acid and folate inclusive) is essential to numerous bodily functions. The human body needs folate to synthesize DNA, repair DNA, and methylate DNA as well as to act as a cofactor in biological reactions involving folate. The folates found in nature contain the core chemical structure of pteroylglutamic acid but vary in their state of reduction, the single carbon moiety they bear and/or the length of the glutamate chain attached. At least 50% of whole body folate is stored in the liver. The metabolic role of folate is as an acceptor and donor of one-carbon units in a variety of reactions involved in amino acid and nucleotide metabolism. The carbon can be carried as a methyl, methylene, formyl, formimino or methenyl group. The coenzyme form of the vitamin is typically fully reduced and poly-glutamylated. In the adult, folate is absorbed primarily in the proximal one-third of the small intestine. It is also conceivable that a portion of the large depot of bacterially synthesized folate in the large intestine may be absorbed. A large portion of folate delivered to the liver is secreted into bile and redistributed to peripheral tissues. Polyglutamylation (addition of glutamic acids) of folate is believed necessary to concentrate and store folates in tissues.
Fosamax Fosamax basically alters the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body. It slows down bone loss while increasing bone mass which helps in preventing bone fractures. It belongs to a group of medicine known as bisphosphonates and it is used in men and women to treat or prevent osteoporosis that is caused by menopause or by taking steroids. Fosamax is also used to increase bone mass in men who have osteoporosis and treat Paget's disease of bone. In case of any surgery, it is necessary to reveal doctor that you are taking fosamax. The medication is only the part of entire exercise which includes diet changes, exercise, taking calcium and vitamin supplements.
Galvus Galvus, sold as tablets, contains the vidagliptin active ingredient which is a DPP-4 inhibitor and it is used to treat people with type II diabetes, whose blood sugar is not sufficiently controlled by other medicines. It works by increasing the amount of glucagon-like peptide-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide which are normally produced naturally by the body in response to food intake. You should not take this drug if you have a type I diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis or decreased liver function, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have severe heart failure.
Diabetes mellitus is a group of common metabolic disorders characterized by abnormally high sugar/glucose levels in the blood – a state known as hyperglycemia. It is a disease caused by an interaction of genetics and lifestyle (e.g. high intake of sweets). Continue reading...
Gleevec, Glivec Imatinib, marketed by Novartis as Gleevec (U.S.) or Glivec (Europe/Australia/Latin America), is a competitive tyrosine-kinase inhibitor used in the treatment of multiple cancers, most notably Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Like all tyrosine-kinase inhibitors, imatinib works by preventing a central tyrosine kinase enzyme, in this case BCR-Abl, from phosphorylating subsequent proteins and initiating the signaling cascade necessary for cancer development, thus preventing the growth of cancer cells and leading to their death by apoptosis. Because the BCR-Abl tyrosine kinase enzyme exists only in cancer cells and not in healthy cells, imatinib works as a form of targeted therapy—only cancer cells are killed through the drug's action. In this regard, imatinib was one of the first cancer therapies to show the potential for such targeted action, and is often cited as a paradigm for research in cancer therapeutics.
Glucobay Precose is an oral medication used to treat the noninsulin-dependent diabetes, also known as type II diabetes, when high blood sugar levels cannot be controlled just by diet. Inulin Inulin belongs to a class of fiber known as fructans and hence the part of a group of naturally occurring polysaccharides, which are soluble fibres. Because of the nature of its composition it is being widely used in processed foods as replacement to sugar, fat and flour and also in various medicines and usage like measuring the kidney function. The versatile ingredients in inulin increases calcium absorption and magnesium absorption and have many other health benefits. Impact of Inulin in increasing blood sugar is minimal compared to fructose and hence and can be a good component for diabetic food. But Inulin is no without its share of side affects. Usage of this fiber in large quantities has been linked to gas and bloating.
Iodide (KI) Iodine is an element required in small amounts for healthy grow and development. An adult body contains about 30mg of iodine, concentrated in the thyroid gland. A deficiency of iodine leads to a swelling of the neck due to enlargement of the thyroid gland. Iodine protects the body against radiation, especially ionizing radiation which can be very damaging. Dietary sources of iodine are sea food and iodized table salt. Iodide is required as thyroid gland protector and is also used as an antiseptic.

K-2 Vitamin Heart calcification
Patients suffering from osteoporosis were shown to have extensive calcium plaques, which impaired blood flow in the arteries. This simultaneous excess of calcium in one part of the body (arteries), and lack in another (bones) – which may occur even in spite of calcium supplementation – is known as the Calcium Paradox. The underlying reason is vitamin K2 deficiency, which leads to significant impairment in biological function of MGP, the most potent inhibitor of vascular calcification presently known. Fortunately, animal research showed that vascular calcification might not only be prevented, but even reversed by increasing the daily intake of vitamin K2. The strongly protective effect of K2 and not vitamin K1 on cardiovascular health was confirmed by, among others, Geleijnse et al. in the Rotterdam Study (2004, see Figure 3) performed on a group of 4,800 subjects. Results of more than 10 years of follow-up were verified, also by Gast et al., who demonstrated that among K vitamins, the long-chain types of K2 (MK-7 through MK-9) are the most important for efficiently preventing excessive calcium accumulation in the arteries.
Kaletra Kaletra contains lopinavir and ritonavir as its active ingredients.
Lopinavir is a protease inhibitor. When viral RNA gets transcribed into DNA and DNA gets translated into proteins, the viral proteins produced are joined together, forming a long polypeptide sequence. In order for the different viral proteins to function properly, they must first separate from the long polypeptide sequence. HIV proteases take over the task of breaking the long polypeptide into functional proteins. Of course, this is bad news for us. Lopinavir functions by inhibiting HIV proteases and thus preventing the formation of functional viral proteins.
Lopinavir gets metabolised in the liver almost exclusively by CYP3A, a cytochrome P450 enzyme. This is why ritonavir is also administered with lopinavir; as it is a CYP3A inhibitor, and therefore has the potential to suppress lopinavir’s metabolism, increasing its levels in the body and thus prolonging and potentiating its effects.
Lamisil Lamisil is the first oral antimycotic of the allylamine class of antifungals. It possesses a broad spectrum of antifungal activity, with proven activity against dermatophytes, molds, and some yeasts and dimorphic fungi. Lamisil (Terbinafine) used to treat infections caused by fungus and affect the toenails and fingernails. Also, the lamisil oral granules are used in treating children under four years with fungal infections of scalp hair follicles and for the treatment of superficial fungal infections, particularly onychomycosis of the nails.
Fungal Infections: Onychomycosis
Fungal infections may be classified as systemic mycoses or superficial infections. The former is a more serious condition wherein the fungi invades the body and enters the general circulation, whereas the latter involves infection of the external structures such as the skin.
Lescol Lipids or fats in the body are classified into three groups: cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospoholipids. Upon entering the body via the digestive system, dietary lipids from the foods we eat are absorbed and transported throughout the body in the form of protein-lipid complexes known as lipoproteins. The three classes of lipoproteins are low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). Intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL) are lipoproteins with densities between VLDL and LDL.
In predisposed people such as the obese, abnormalities in the levels of lipoproteins can occur, resulting in a condition called hypercholesterolemia. This condition is defined as a state of elevated cholesterol levels, the primary indicator being LDL and total cholesterol.

Lotensin Lotensin or benazepril hydrochloride is a prescription only antihypertensive drug belonging to the ACE inhibitors. It is also used for the treatment of congestive heart failure (Sweetman, 2009).
Lotensin is a nonsulfhydryl prodrug (Balfour and Goa, 1991), which means that upon administration, it is converted to its active metabolite. Specifically, the ester moiety of the drug is cleaved by the esterases found in the body, benazeprilat. This active metabolite is responsible for its antihypertensive action. The drug can be seen in the blood in as fast as one hour, reaching maximum activity within 2-4 hours. Though the maximal effect is felt in the said time, the full physiological effect may not develop for about two weeks (Sweetman, 2009). Mechanism of Action – The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and ACE ACE Inhibitors such as Lotensin are drugs that act on ACE involved in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Renin, the first enzyme involved, is released from the kidneys when there is a decrease in blood pressure in the body, as signaled by low perfusion or as signaled by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).

Metformin Metformin: Anti-diabetes, Anti-cancer and Anti-aging drug
Metformin is a safe and cost-effective drug which has been used for over 5 decades for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is presently the only available biguanide used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (biguanides are drugs that lower glucose levels). Its mechanism of action is not well established; however it is understood that it probably involves its ability to increase the activity of hepatic insulin, aid the release of incretins, decrease deposition of amyloid and alter the metabolism of bile acids. Metformin is also sometimes prescribed for women with ovulation problems. There have also been evidence that suggests the drug to have some anticancer effects as studies from epidemiology, in vitro and animal trials have indicated. Metformin is also gaining increasing attention from researchers as it has been indicated as a geroprotector, i.e. a drug able to prolong lifespan. Continue reading...
Metoprolol Metoprolol works by blocking the action of the sympathetic nervous system, which is a portion of the involuntary nervous system, by blocking beta receptors on sympathetic nerves and reducing the heart rate. Metoprolol is useful in treating abnormally rapid heart rhythms because the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for increasing the heart beat rate. Also, it reduces the force of contraction of heart muscle and lowers blood pressure. By reducing this, Metoprolol also reduces the need for oxygen by heart muscle and is helpful in treating heart pain, called angina pectoris, which occurs when oxygen demand of the heart muscle exceeds the supply.

Fungi (Kingdom Myceetae) are a group of organisms that are somewhat hard to describe. They are considered a group between groups, because of the sharing of characteristics between different organisms. For instance, some fungi are single- celled (like many bacteria are), while some are as large as plants. Some reproduce by fission (asexual reproduction), while others reproduce sexually. Nolvadex Nolvadex (tamoxifen) is used in the treatment of some kind of breast cancer. Nolvadex is recommended for women who are at high risk for breast cancer and for women with DCIS, but after surgery and radiation. It blocks female hormone called estrogen there by preventing the growth of tumours that are activated by estrogen. Hormones that cause breast cancer growth may also be blocked by ovarian function suppression using drugs, surgery or radiation to the ovaries. It is not yet known if giving ovarian function suppression together with tamoxifen citrate or exemestane is more effective than giving tamoxifen citrate alone in treating breast cancer.
Background of disease which the drug treat
After Lung cancer, breast cancer is classified as the most common type of cancer worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, over 1 million new cases are being diagnosed annually. In 2000, almost 400,000 women died from it, representing about 1.6% of all female deaths, and in 2008, about 480,000 women. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death. Continue reading...

Norvasc Why is this drug prescribed?
Norvasc is prescribed for angina, a condition characterized by episodes of crushing chest pain that usually results from a lack of oxygen in the heart muscle due to clogged arteries. Norvasc is also prescribed for high blood pressure. It is a type of medication called a calcium channel blocker. These drugs dilate blood vessels and slow the heart to reduce blood pressure and the pain of angina.
Most important fact about this drug
If you have high blood pressure, you must take Norvasc regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Norvasc; and you must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Norvasc does not cure high blood pressure; it merely keeps it under control. Continue reading...

Pumpkinseed oil Pumpkin seed oil are rich in the good fats which are absolutely essential to joint and health in general. Deficiency in these fats leads to all manner of problems such as heart disease, depression and cancer. This is very probable most of us eat too much sugar (carbs) and processed vegetable oils (which causes vitamin E deficiency as all is lost in processing). We are highly deficient in the Omega 3 and 9 fats and are literally phobic of good saturated fats. In addition to Pumpkin seed oil, Fish oil is good resource of essential oils too.

Raloxifene is also taken alongside with Vitamin D and Calcium, which makes the action of the drug more efficient. The side effects that have been recorded when taking Raloxifene include vasodilation and flu-like symptoms. Moreover, patients who are pregnant, have blood clot disorders and other cardiovascular anomalies are discouraged to take the medicine.
Rapamycin In the years since, rapamycin has been adapted for numerous uses. Like penicillin, it’s a biological agent, so it can’t be patented, although derivatives of it can. It’s now used routinely as a coating on cardiac stents to prevent scarring and blocking. Derivatives of rapamycin have been approved for use against certain kidney, lung, and breast cancers. That may be just the beginning. Over the past decade, it’s shown promise as a drug that not only can extend life by delaying the onset of aging-related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease, but also postpone the effects of normal aging. With an eye toward changing the way millions grow older, Novartis, the $260 billion Swiss pharmaceutical giant, has begun taking the first steps to position a version of rapamycin as the first true anti-aging drug.

Reyataz Reyataz is a protease inhibitor. When viral RNA gets transcribed into DNA and DNA gets translated into proteins, the viral proteins produced are joined together, forming a long polypeptide sequence. In order for the different viral proteins to function properly, they must first separate from the long polypeptide sequence. HIV proteases take over the task of breaking the long polypeptide into functional proteins; which can then assemble together with RNA to form new viruses. Reyataz functions by inhibiting HIV proteases and thus preventing the formation of functional viral proteins.
Rhodiola root RHODIOLA ROSEA (Golden root)
This is a perennial plant with red, pink, or yellowish flowers. It is no biological relation of the "common" rose, but due to its similar fragrance it has been used as a substitute for Attar of Roses. One of the greatest things Rhodiola does is enhance mental and physical performance. It has been widely used by Russian athletes to increase energy. Rhodiola is cardio-protective, normalizing the heart-rate immediately after intense exercise. It improves nervous system and mental functions such as memory by increasing blood-supply to the muscles and brain, and also increases protein synthesis. Rhodiola rosea has extraordinary pharmacological properties as an anti-mutagen and anti-depressive agent. In this respect Rhodiola rosea is much more powerful than other adaptogens.

Rutin is also found in the fruit of the Fava D'Anta tree (from Brazil), fruits and fruit rinds (especially citrus fruits (orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime)) and berries such as mulberry and cranberries. Rutinin the form of ferulic acid, can reduce the cytotoxicity of oxidized LDL cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease. There are also reports available that rutin can be use for the treatment of hemorrhoids, varicosis, and microangiopathy. Rutin is the glycoside between the flavonol quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose.
Schisandra Schisandra is a type of shrub that is found to grow mainly in parts of Asia where it is normally used to make medicine from its berries. There are about 20 types of the plant being used by the Chinese to make medicines most of which are used as sedatives.
Another good medical use of the Schisandra extracts is in the treatment of the Irritable bowel syndrome. There have been no clinical trials on this but naturalists and herb specialists attest to its healing properties. Modern medicine has however proven that Schisandra when combined with some other plant compounds called lignans actually have the effect of protecting the liver from viral hepatitis.
Other ways of using Schisandra are as an adaptogen (stress and anxiety reliever) and as a way of boosting one’s immune system against various diseases or everyday weakness.

Singulair Montelukast (trade name Singulair) is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies. It is usually administered orally. Montelukast is a CysLT1 antagonist; that is it blocks the action of leukotriene D4 on the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor CysLT1 in the lungs and bronchial tubes by binding to it. This reduces the bronchoconstriction otherwise caused by the leukotriene, and results in less inflammation. Because of its method of operation, it is not useful for the treatment of acute asthma attacks. Again because of its very specific focus of operation, it does not interact with other allergy medications such as theophylline. Another leukotriene receptor antagonist is zafirlukast (Accolate), taken twice daily. Zileuton (Zyflo), an asthma drug taken four times per day, blocks leukotriene synthesis by inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme of the eicosanoid synthesis pathway. The Mont in Montelukast stands for Montreal, the place where Merck developed the drug.
Sporanox Sporanox (Generic name: itraconazole) is a triazole antifungal drug. In the triazole group of antifungals other drugs are also included instead of itraconazole such as fluconazole, posaconazole, pramiconazole, isavuconazole, and voriconazole. Itraconazole was invented in 1984 and was first marketed under the brand name of sporanox. Sporanox oral solution is indicated for the treatment of oropharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis while the sporanox capsules are indicated for the treatment of different fungal infections in immunocompromised and non- immunocompromised patients including blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and aspergillosis. Sporanox capsules are also indicated for the treatment of onychomycosis of toenail and fingernail in the non-immunocompromised patients. Mechanism of action It has been observed that the itraconazole inhibits the cytochrome P450-dependent synthesis of ergosterol, which is a vital component of fungal cell membrane. As there is no ergosterol synthesis thus the fungal cytoplasmic membrane becomes weak and the cellular permeability of fungus increases and thus leakage of cellular components occur which ultimately leads to the death of the fungus. Stablon Tianeptine, sold as Stablon, Coaxil or Tatinol, is a drug used for treating major depressive episodes mild, moderate or severe. It is a neuroprotective antidepressant which reverses the neuronal damage and confusion caused by chronic or uncontrolled stress and it has a definite action in reducing anxiety and can increase the intake and the availability of the calming neurotransmitter: serotonin. Stablon has the ability to relieve anxious symptoms in depressed patients, leading to a dramatic and significant decrease in anxiolytic coprescription, which is a key advantage of this drug. Common serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac or Paxil try to keep as much existing serotonin as possible in circulation, in contrast with Stablon which does exactly the opposite, with the aim of reducing the body's brain and hormonal response to stress. It is an oral medicine available as tablets and can be taken by mouth with full glass of water before taking any food. Before taking Stablon you should speak to your doctor and let him know about any vitamins, supplemets or minerals. Take Stablon exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Sustiva Sustiva (efavirenz) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) , effective only for HIV type 1 (the most common type of HIV).
HIV is a retrovirus: it holds all its genetic information in the form of RNA. When it infects a host cell, the RNA gets copied into DNA by an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. In the form of DNA, the viral genetic code can integrate itself in its host’s own DNA. Then, as the host’s DNA is copied into RNA and then proteins are produced according to the code, the viral DNA gets copied along, and produces its own proteins. The viral proteins together with viral RNA then join to make up more viruses. HIV-1 inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme of HIV-1, leading to a reduction of HIV-1 levels in the body and an increase in the levels of CD4+ cells (cells of our immune system and one of the main targets of HIV – their levels normally decrease after an HIV infection).

Topamax for Migraine Prevention
Antiepileptic agents such as Topamax have been shown in several studies to be efficacious in migraine prevention. Storey, et al. (2001) conducted a single-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to assess the clinical safety and efficacy of Topamax in the prophylaxis of migraine. After the study period, they concluded that prophylactic therapy with Topamax significantly reduced frequency of migraine episodes among patients. Similar studies by Brandes et al. (2004) and Silberstein et al. (2007) also reported highly desirable outcomes using Topamax prophylactic therapy. Continue reading...
Tritico Tritico (trazodone) is an tetracyclic antidepressant medication which is thought to increase the activity of one of the brain chemicals, called serotonin that may become unbalanced and cause depression. It can also be used for relief of anxiety disorders such as sleeplessness, tension and chronic pain.
Truvada HIV is a retrovirus: it holds all its genetic information in the form of RNA. Emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate both work by inhibiting the action of reverse transcriptase, thus inhibiting the propagation of HIV.
Emtricitabine in cells gets converted into emtricitabine 5'-triphosphate, an analogue of deoxycytidine 5'-triphosphate, one of the four nucleotides from which DNA assembles. When viral RNA is reverse-transcribed into DNA in the cell, emtricitabine 5'-triphosphate gets incorporated in the place of deoxycytidine 5'-triphosphate into the DNA that is being synthesised. When this happens, DNA synthesis is halted, as the next nucleotide can not form a bond with emtricitabine 5'-triphosphate (this DNA synthesis halt is called chain termination).
Valdoxan Valdoxan (agomelatine) (trade names Valdoxan, Melitor, Thymanax) is an melatonergic antidepressant developed by the pharmaceutical company Servier. Vinpocetine Vinpocetine basically is a anti stroke remedy which is also useful for brain circulation, memory improvement, anticonvulsant, cognition enhancement, neuroprotection and hearing ability. It is available under the brand name of cavinton and intelectol. It works by blocking calcium channel activity as well as voltage gated sodium channel. It has also been found that vinpocetine inhibits the acetylcholine release evoked by excitatory amino acids. Above this it is also reported to inhibit a cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase and it is speculated that this inhibition enhances cyclic GMP levels in the vascular smooth muscle which leads to reduced resistance of cerebral vessels and increase of cerebral flow.
Vinpotropile Vinpotropile is a combination of Vinpocetine (with cerebro protecting properties) and Piracetam (with nootropic properties). It is basically micro-circulation enhancer which improves oxygen supply to brain cells. Piracetam increases brain cell metabolism and energy levels, and speeds up interhemispheric flow of information. Piracetam markedly decreases the formation of neuronal lipofuscin and improves posture in elderly people. It basically works by oxygenating and activating cerebral metabolism. Vinpotropile side effects include decrease in blood pressure, rarely tachycardia and extrasystole, prolonging the excitability time of the ventricle.
Viread The active ingredient of Viread is tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, which belongs in the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) class of antiretroviral drugs. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in cells gets converted into tenofovir diphosphate, an analogue of deoxyadenosine 5’-triphosphate, one of the four nucleotides from which DNA assembles. When viral RNA is reverse-transcribed into DNA in the cell, tenofovir diphosphate gets incorporated in the place of deoxyadenosine 5’-triphosphate into the DNA that is being synthesised. When this happens, DNA synthesis is halted, as the next nucleotide can not form a bond with tenofovir diphosphate (this DNA synthesis halt is called chain termination).
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate was shown to decrease the levels of HIV RNA in the body, and to increase the levels of CD4+ cells (cells of our immune system and one of the main targets of HIV – their levels normally decrease after an HIV infection).

Xeloda Xeloda, generic named Capecitabine, makes part from a class of drugs known as antimetabolites. Capecitabine resembles a normal cell nutrient which is needed by cancer cells to grow. It is used to treat cancer, because the cancer cells take up the capecitabine which interferes with their growth.
Xenical Xenical (generic name: Orlistat) is a drug that promotes loss of weight by preventing the digestion and absorption of dietary fat. In the intestine, an enzyme called lipase (produced primarily by the pancreas) breaks apart dietary fat so that the fat can be absorbed into the body. Orlistat blocks the action of lipase and thereby prevents the breakup and absorption of fat. The unabsorbed fat is excreted in the stool. Orlistat was approved by the FDA in 1999. Weight and Fat Our society is very critical with appearance - everyone is conscious of how they look, paying attention to every detail, especially their weight. Most people, if not everyone, equate having a low body weight to looking good. There are very few exceptions, women and men alike desire to look and feel good by achieving their desired weight. Aside from the aesthetic aspect of the weight issue, most people are conscious of their weight because it as a big factor to consider in health. However, body weight does not bear much significance, as it tells nothing about body composition, which is more important. Continue reading...

Ziagen The active ingredient of Ziagen is abacavir sulfate, which belongs in the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) class of antiretroviral drugs.
Abacavir sulfate in cells gets converted into carbovir triphosphate, an analogue of deoxyguanosine-5′-triphosphate, one of the four nucleotides from which DNA assembles. When viral RNA is reverse-transcribed into DNA in the cell, carbovir triphosphate gets incorporated in the place of deoxyguanosine-5′-triphosphate into the DNA that is being synthesised. When this happens, DNA synthesis is halted, as the next nucleotide can not form a bond with carbovir triphosphate (this DNA synthesis halt is called chain termination).

Zithromax Zithromax, Sumamed, generic named: azithromycin, is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic chemically related to erythromycin and clarithromycin also known as biaxin. It is used in treating a wide variety of bacteria organisms, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, mycobacterium avium, and many others. Unusually, it stays in the body for quite a while, allowing for once a day dosing and for shorter treatment courses for most infections. Azithromycin, like all macrolide antibiotics, prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their ability to make proteins. Due to the differences in the way proteins are made in bacteria and humans, the macrolide antibiotics do not interfere with humans' ability to make proteins.
Zocor Zocor, also known as Simvastatin, is a cholesterol-lowering drug. Your doctor may prescribe Simvastatin in addition to a cholesterol-lowering diet if your blood cholesterol level is too high, and if you have been unable to lower it by diet alone. In people with high cholesterol and heart disease, Simvastatin reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and "mini-stroke" (transient ischemic attack) and can stave off the need for bypass surgery or angioplasty to clear clogged arteries.
Zocor is a hypolipidemic drug, which means that it lowers the lipid level in the blood. It is a member of the statin group of drugs. Zocor is mainly used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia (high level of cholesterol in blood). FDA approved Zocor in 1997. Continue reading...
Zofran Zofran is a drug commonly used by cancer patients who underwent either chemotherapy or radiation therapy in order to avoid the occurrence of vomiting and nausea. Although there are also non-cancer patients who are given this drug, for the same purpose after a surgical procedure was done on them.

It is very important to note that this drug should not be used for treating dementia - if taken for such psychotic conditions it may lead to heart failure, sudden death or pneumonia. It has been noticed that drinking alcohol along with zyprexa can increase sleepiness. Sometimes patients develop severe sedation, coma or delirium after an injection of extended release olanzapine. This drug sometimes increases prolactin levels which manifests as abnormal menstruation, sexual dysfunction and breast enlargement. Zyprexa can also be used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer drug treatment (chemotherapy).
