Why is this drug prescribed?
Xalatan is used to relieve high pressure within the eye (a hallmark of the condition known as open-angle glaucoma). Xalatan usually is prescribed when other medications have failed to do the job or have caused other problems.

Most important fact about this drug
Be careful not to let the tip of the Xalatan bottle touch your eye or anything else. Otherwise, the contents could become contaminated. A contaminated solution can cause an eye infection and lead to serious damage, including loss of vision.

How should you take this medication?
Use Xalatan exactly as prescribed. It should be applied only once a day; more frequent administration may reduce its effectiveness. Apply one drop to the eye in the evening. If you are using other eye drops to lower pressure, allow at least 5 minutes between applications of the two medications. Contact lenses should be removed before the drug is applied. Wait 15 minutes before reinserting them.

--If you miss a dose... Apply it as soon as possible. If you don't remember until the next day, skip the dose and go back to your regular schedule. Never double the dose.

Storage
Store unopened bottles in the refrigerator. Once opened, the bottles may be stored at room temperature for up to 6 weeks. Protect from light.

What side effects may occur?
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Be especially quick to report pinkeye or any effects on the eyelids. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using Xalatan.
More common side effects may include:
Bloodshot eyes, blurred vision, burning, foreign body sensation, increased pigmentation of the iris, inflammatory disease of the cornea, itching, stinging, upper respiratory infection
Less common side effects may include:
Allergic reactions, back pain, chest pain, dry eye, excessive tearing, eye pain, eyelid crusting or reddening, eyelid swelling or pain, intolerance to light, joint and muscle pain, rash
Rare side effects may include:
Asthma, double vision, eye discharge, eyelash and body hair changes, eyelash misdirection, eyelid darkening, inflamed cornea, inflammation inside the eyeball, pinkeye, shortness of breath, swelling and erosion of the cornea, swelling at the center of the retina

Why should this drug not be prescribed?
Do not use Xalatan if you are sensitive or allergic to any of its ingredients.

Special warnings about this medication
Xalatan may gradually turn the eye's iris brown. This change may not be noticed for months or years. Its long-term effects are unknown, but it may be permanent. Ask your doctor about the possibility of mismatched eye color if you will be treating only one eye with Xalatan. Xalatan may make the eyelids darker. It can gradually change the eyelashes and fine body hair, increasing the length, thickness, color, and number of lashes or hairs. The eyelashes may also start growing in the wrong direction, possibly resulting in irritation to the eye. If your eye sustains an injury or becomes infected, or you have eye surgery, you may need to start a new bottle of Xalatan. Be sure to check with your doctor. Xalatan may cause blurred vision. Make certain it does not have this effect on you before you attempt to drive.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication
Mixing Xalatan with eye drops containing thiomersal can cause the formation of solid substances in the eye. To avoid this problem, administer the drops at least 5 minutes apart.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
The effects of Xalatan during pregnancy and breastfeeding have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately. It is not known whether Xalatan makes it way into breast milk. If you are nursing and need to use Xalatan, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding while using the medication.

Recommended dosage
The usual dose is 1 drop in the affected eye once every evening.

Overdosage
Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
Symptoms of Xalatan overdose may include:
eye irritation.

Caution! Before starting to take this medicine, it is vital that you should consult your doctor! Do not use it on your own initiative, without medical advice.

Xalatan notes:

Xalatan is the brand name medication of the Xalatan generic equivalent latanoprost ophthalmic. It is a medication that is used to reduce pressure in the eye by increasing fluid drainage from your eye. You doctor may prescribe Xalatan eye drops or latanoprost drops if you have certain types of glaucoma or some other condition that results in high pressure inside the eye. It is advised that you do not use the Xalatan eye drops or the latanoprost generic alternative while you are wearing your contact lenses; the preservative found in the medication can be absorbed by soft contact lenses. After you use the medication wait at least 15 minutes before putting in your contact lenses.

Some Xalatan side effects include a gradual changing of eye color, eyelids. With the use of Xalatan or the generic latanoprost, eyelashes may grow thicker and faster than normal. The color change of the eyes with the Xalatan eye drops is typically an increase in the brown pigment and will increase gradually without any notice over the course of months or years. Even after treatment with Xalatan eye drops has ceased the resultant change in eye color may be permanent. You should be aware that with the use of Xalatan or latanoprost, eyelash and eye color may slightly differ between your two eyes.

If the brand name product Xalatan price is too high you can use the latanoprost generic as it is the same medication. Many patients find that with Xalatan, cost is an issue in its being an effective treatment option. If you do opt for the latanoprost generic, be aware that the latanoprost side effects are the same as the Xalatan side effects. You should never let the eye dropper touch any surface including your eyes and hands. A contaminated dropper can cause an infection that may lead to serious eye damage and loss of vision. If your doctor has prescribed any other eye drop medications, wait at least 5 minutes after using the Xalatan eye drops before using the other medications.

As with any other medication, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or if you have any medication allergies. It may also have an effect on your child if you are nursing. Do not use Xalatan if you have an allergy to the latanoprost generic equivalent. Also, do not use it if you have swelling or infection in the eye.
