Istodax - New drug for CTCL

Recently US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new drug called Istodax (romidepsin) for the treatment of white blood cell cancer Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma (CTCL) which is a very rare kind of disease. According to reports, about 1,500 Americans every year are newly diagnosed with CTCL which is a slow growing cancer that affects lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that helps the body to fight against infection.

The effect of this disease starts with dry skin and a red rash followed by itching that can be very severe and the skin can develop tumors that become ulcerated and finally infected. Such kind of cancer can be treated using skin creams if it is localized, but in case if it spreads in the body patients are cured through chemotherapy. Istodax works by interfering with cell replication and is intended for patients whose CTCL has got worsed.

Istodax is the fourth drug to receive FDA approval for the treatment of CTCL besides Zolinza (vorinostat), Ontak (denileukin difitox) and Targretin (bexarotene). The approval was granted on the evidence of two clinical studies involving 167 patients out of which about 35 per cent in both trials showed decrease in the tumour size. Istodax common side effects includes nausea, fatigue, infections, vomiting, decreased appetite, decreased red blood cell count and decreased platelet count.
